QUEENS Badminton Club in Crediton runs several sessions every week for children and adults. The annual 24-hour badminton event late last year is one of the few times that children from these different training sessions get to mix and work and play together.
As coaches, volunteers and parents we got to see how brilliantly the older ones kept an eye on the younger ones, how peers supported each other and how quieter children had time to gain confidence and blossom.
And yes, some of the players did stay up for the full 24-hours – two badminton courts are reserved for players keen to keep playing in the small hours while the rest of the hall became a vast dormitory littered with sleeping bags!
A packed programme kept the players busy: highlights included intense coaching sessions in the morning from England’s National Singles Coach, Steve Butler. We were honoured to host Steve, who is not contractually allowed to coach any other club in the country apart from Queens BC here in Crediton and the National Squad.
The players continued to work hard in the afternoon and were rewarded with a festive party tea, complete with streamers, balloons and a visit from Father Christmas with presents for small children and big kids alike!
Our own version of Britain’s Got Talent – Queens Got Talent – was entertaining with some hitherto unrecognised talents emerging from some players!
Judges had to choose between diabolo juggling, dance routines, sausage throwing, musical performances and more before it was time to move on to team games.
We couldn’t have run the event without the co-operation of Chulmleigh Community Sports Hall, our coaches who give up their time freely every week, and parents who might have travelled a little further than normal but who tirelessly support their children’s enjoyment and progression at badminton.
Special mentions go to Jan Skinner who organised the party tea and decorations, Father Christmas (very busy at that time of year), and Sarah Preece and Nick Masson for co-ordinating the whole event with so much enthusiasm and dedication.
We always welcome newcomers. Check our website for more information. First session is free.
