More people should walk
CREDITON Town Square has greatly enhanced the appearance of Crediton.
It would be a disaster if it were to be used for car parking. I fail to understand the fuss about the difficulty of parking.
There is usually a free place to be found around the town square, opposite the Library or in Union Road.
There are also places in Market Street car park, apart from the really busy times of day and always spaces in St Saviour’s Way car park.
This latter car park is only a few minutes from the High Street. At this time of concern about fitness and obesity the short return walk up the slope while carrying bags could be seen as a health benefit.
Furthermore, I suggest more people should consider walking into town to do their High Street shopping.
We have some excellent
shops and the traders need our support.

Curry and quiz
raises £97
AS part of its 2008 programme of fundraising events the Crediton and District Committee of Macmillan Cancer Support held a Curry and Quiz evening at the Devonshire Dumpling, Morchard Road.
The event raised £97.12 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
May I take this opportunity to thank the landlord and staff of the Devonshire Dumpling for allowing us to hold the event, the teams who took part and to members of the committee for achieving such an excellent result.

Heartfelt thanks
AS promoters of the collection for the British Heart Foundation outside Somerfield in Crediton on April 18 and 19 we would like to thank all those who kindly contributed, and also the staff of Somerfield for making us so welcome.
We are pleased to say that the total raised by the collection was £433.92 and this amount will be sent to the Heart Foundation headquarters shortly.
We are so grateful to the people of Crediton and surrounding area for supporting the work of the British Heart Foundation so generously.
They may be assured that the money will be put to good use in furthering our work of financing research into the causes and treatment of heart disease and in the provision of vital equipment to local surgeries and hospitals.
We also assist with locating portable defibrillators in venues where large numbers of people gather, and just last month one was presented to Exeter Cathedral.
May we take this opportunity to advise your readers of another forthcoming opportunity to support the Heart Foundation. On May 18 there will be a Sponsored Walk along the Exeter Canal. Details of this can be obtained by telephoning 01395 274738.

This is the spirit
of Crediton
ON two recent occasions, I have stopped a passing pedestrian - a total stranger - and asked if they would kindly guide me out of a tight, boxed-in parking space in Crediton High Street. They have; willingly.
I hope I thanked them sufficiently at the time and would like to do so again, should they read this, but would also hope that many others have had similar experiences; so that we can say: “This is the spirit of Crediton!”

Are the parking and Business Rates causing decline?
I READ in your current issue of the Courier, a story asking if Crediton town is dying and that is before Tesco.
I just wonder if the inability to park one’s car and the barbaric business rate, has just a little to do with the situation.
I don’t think you have to be ever so clever to realise that if you cannot stop your car to park you are going to carry on to Exeter or Tiverton.
I believe that councils and councillors are the prime suspects in the attempted “murder” of the town and the corpse may take some reviving.

Can anyone help
this writer?
CAN any of your readers possibly help me regarding Kathleen Verdun Pike (nee Jeffery or Mercer).
She was my Auntie Kathleen and died in 1969. She was married to a William Thomas Pike and lived at no 51 Butt Parks, Crediton at the time of her death.
After many searches I have failed to obtain any photos and wondered if it was possible that any of your readers may have known this lady and whether a photo is available?
I would really appreciate any help as this would close a chapter in my family’s history.
