Downes Crediton Golf Club
A CLUB Stableford was held at Downes Crediton Golf Club on April 13 with more than 107 gentlemen and lady members taking part.
In typical April showery conditions, some excellent scores were produced in all divisions.
Results were as follows:
Division One (handicaps 0-12): 1 Simon Cartlidge H’cap 10 46pts, 2 Isaac Greenwood H’cap 5 41pts, 3 David Frear H’cap 6 40pts.
Division Two (13 - 18): 1 David Taylor H’cap 16 40pts, 2 Scott Singleton H’cap 15 39pts, 3 Steve Robinson H’cap 17 37pts.
Division Three (19 and above): 1 Ben Marchant H’cap 22 44 pts on countback, 2 Graham Isaac H’cap 19 44pts, 3 Roger Willcocks H’cap 25 41pts.
Junior Spring Salver
On April 16 the Junior Section battled it out in their first trophy competition of the season.
The Spring Salver is a medal competition which this year saw some younger juniors achieving impressive results.
Results were as follows: 1 Jake Ebdon H’cap 39 Gross 91 Net 52, 2 Thomas Trowbridge H’cap 37 Gross 93 Net 56 on countback, 3 Luke Ebdon H’cap 37 Gross 93 Net 56.
LADIES SECTION
An Express and Echo Foursomes was played on April 17 with 10 teams of two entered.
Results were as follows: 1 Barbara Glass and Joyce Gilg 34pts, 2 Pat Jeens and Sylvia Marklew 31pts, 3 Judith Ezard and Margaret Mapledoram 30pts.
Barbara, Joyce, Judith and Margaret will represent the Club in the final in September.
A Ladies County Stableford Four, in aid of Breast Cancer, was held on April 24, results were as follows:
Silver Division: 1 Margaret Mapledoram 32pts, 2 Angela Battershall 28pts, 3 Juliet Gardner 25pts (bb9).
Bronze Division One: 1 Sue Bonner 30pts (bb9), 2 June Skuse 30pts, 3 Rickie Pawsey 27pts.
Bronze Division Two: 1 Sue Sparham 28pts, 2 Anne Jones 24pts, 3 Ruth Ford 20pts.
As the competition was in aid of Breast Cancer players were asked to dress up in pink. The prize for the best dressed lady went to Margaret Mapledoram.
Okehampton Golf Club
Sunday, April 20
WHAT a busy week it was for the members of Okehampton Golf Club. It started on Sunday, April 13 with the Juniors Spring Open Meeting.
Jonny Rattenbury won the Farmers’ Trophy Scratch prize with a gross 73. Jordon Lee won the Handicap prize with a net 63 and Kieran Mitchell won the Dartmouth Trophy with 35pts.
On Monday, April 14 they were out again, this time playing Wrangaton at Dainton Park in the Basil Steer Trophy. They won 2-1 overall with Jonny winning 5-4, Ollie Kirby won 4-3 and the captain of the juniors losing 4-3.
Wednesday saw the ladies playing a qualifying stableford in tricky windy conditions. Kath Mansell won the Bronze Division with 36 pts (taking into the silver division), 2 Eileen Piper 33pts, 3 Val Dodsworth 32pts.
The Silver Division was very close with the top three all scoring 32 pts. In first place on countback was Lady Captain Cherry James, 2 Pam Jarman (also on countback), 3 Kay King.
Friday saw the Seniors playing their first round of the Emerton Court Trophy they played away at Libbaton and managed an excellent 21/2 to 21/2 draw with the home fixture to come.
Also on Friday the Devon County Ladies Veteran Golf Association held their Spring Meeting at Holsworthy, and several ladies from Okehampton attended.
Cherry James was second in the Silver Division scoring 32pts with Kay King also in the prizes in fifth place with 31pts. Maureen Howe was second overall with 34pts, which was excellent scoring in the very windy showery conditions.
Saturday, April 19 was the Anniversary Niblick Stableford which was won by Paul Macdonald, who had an excellent 42pts and won on countback, playing in Division Three. Second was Mark Lang who also had 42pts, 3 Bob Collett 40pts.
Division One was won by Evan Rees 41pts, 2 Dave Bickle 40pts, 3 Kevin Pedrick 39pts.
Second Division: 1 Oliver Kirby 39pts, 2 Dave Hooper 36pts bb9, 3 Mike Hern.
On Sunday the Mixed Open was held with a very good entry with 22 different clubs entering from as far afield as Thornbury, Bristol, down to Carlyon Bay, Cornwall.
The winning visitors were John and Jenny Modica from Yeovil, with 41pts, 2 John Goddard and Sue Leach, from Thornbury, with 36pts, 3 Phil McKinley and Kim Dodge, from Yeovil with 35pts.
The winning Home team were the Captain of the Club Allen Deakin and his wife Penny with 39pts, on the back nine from Carol Skrzypsack and Del Nash with the same score, 3 Roger Slee and Rona McMahon 38pts.
Sunday, April 27
Fourball Better Ball was the competition at the cub on April 26.
Results were as follows:
Division One: 1 Russell Metherell and Nick Redman 47pts, 2 Bob Davies and Nick Heath 45pts, 3 Paul Skidmore and Malcolm Hooper on countback.
Division Two: 1 Richard Boarder and Steve Blandford 45pts on bb9, 2 Barry Coaker and Dave Wooldridge 45pts, 3 Bob Collett and Adrian Rice 43pts.
On Wednesday the ladies played their qualifying Coronation Foursomes. The scoring was close and the first four teams were divided by one point.
1 Lin Atkinson and Jane Warren 32pts (bb9), 2 Lady Captain Cherry James and Doris Jewell 32pts, 3 Penny Deakin and Mary Keir 31pts on countback.
The ladies also played a Friendly match away at Stover on Friday. The weather was beautiful and the day was very successful with the Okehampton ladies learning the recently altered course.
Cherry James and Paula O’Neil won the first match one up, but the team had to wait for the last match of Doris Jewell and Maureen Howe to come in before another successful result could be recorded.
The final result was 41/2 - 11/2 in Stover’s favour.
Chulmleigh Golf Course
RESULTS of recent matches played at Chulmleigh Golf Course were as follows:
Monthly Stableford (April 19): 1 Stacey Ford 38pts (08), 2 Phil Rogers 35pts (18), 3 Sid Payne 33pts (07).
Two Club Challenge Medal (April 5): 1 Andrew Clarke 55pts (18), 2 Mark Thomas 55pts (10), 3 Ken Bragg 56pts (14).
Captain’s Day Stableford (March 29): 1 Graham Clarke 36pts (12), 2 Sid Payne 35pts (07), 3 Stacey Ford 33pts (09).
Results of the monthly medal held on April 26 were as follows:
Mens Medal: 1 Bill Marshall net 50 (09), 2 Roy Dow net 52 (07), 3 Mike Bray net 54 (06).
Ladies Medal: 1 Sue Hiscock net 54 (15), 2 Jean Vogwill net 62 (12).
Junior Medal: 1 Stacey Ford net 58 (07). Lowest gross was Andy Robarts with 56.
Golfing at new course
